Any Dance academy in Delhi is offering a number of different dance forms, one of them being Gaudiya Nritya, an ancient Bengali dance form. It is a very unknown dance form and thus here are a few facts about it:
- Gaudiya means old Bengal and the form of Gaudiya Nritya has its origins in the Natyashastra. It apparently disappeared from the dancing scene because of lack of interest in the form and political disturbances. It was apparently blamed on the western influences on Bengal.
- Guru Sreemati Dr. Mahua Mukherjee has apparently revived the dance form from its ancient ruins. She has applied her scientific knowledge and combined it with the dance form and given the dying dance a new life.
- Gaudiya Nritya apparently is comprised of chau which a form of heroic dance, nachni taken from shringar form, kushan which is about Luv Kush and is inspired mainly from Ramayan and also comprises of Kirtan, a devotional aspect.
- It is believed that the Gaudiya Nritya in a way is an impression of Bengal’s physical areas. The dance reflects the rigid and flexible nature of Bengal. The rivers, the paddy field and the sunderbans show the flexible side of it and the Himalayas show the old Bengal and because of it are rigid in nature.
